The Service Approach

The product approach we just mentioned does require a little bit of creativity. It may be that you either do not have a burning desire to create a new product or you are too mentally tired after your day job. In either case, a service approach can be easier to jump into. This approach allows you to be guided by customers instead of carving your own path. Of course, this does limit you in some ways. On the other hand, you can pick and choose your projects to focus on the technology you want to learn.

A big plus for the service approach is that your revenue is less at risk and likely will come sooner. You might be able to create, market and sell a product in a week. Nevertheless, the odds are higher to land a job, write code and get paid within a week. That is not to say that providing a service always leads to compensation in the same week. It is just more likely to be something you can schedule, plan, and expect.
